Photo Project: Working with Frames

leo castillo photoworks.jpg

Yesterday concluded the end of our six day workshop for Batch 25 of Photoworks! I learned a lot from Leo Castillo and my classmates. It is a class I am recommending to those who would want to learn how to develop an eye for photography with (relatively) not a lot of technical information.

To cap it off, I’d like to do a case study of one of my photo projects where I had to print something using emphasis with frames. I already had the initial shot in mind, to take my dog peeping through the spokes of our calesa in the garden. The problem was how to make him sit still whilst I focused.

Here’s what I did. I turned off auto focus and manually focused on the wheel with my 50mm prime lens. My dog doesn’t have a very long neck so I would assume that he would be on the same focal length as the wheel. I propped the 350D on the tripod and used an RC-1 remote control. What I did was to take the orange ball and put it in between the spokes so that Hondo (my Boston) would try to get it. I was on top of him at the time, firing the shutter every second.

I guess that this goes to show how hard it is to photograph pets. Not only do you need to get down to their level, but you also need to show some form of engagement and be able to freeze that action. I only had one good shot out of about 20.

I was shooting with an ISO of 100 which I realize now made the shot harder because it bumped my shutter speed to 1/20 which is hard for pet shots, especially when they move fast. Thank God he stayed still for once.

Killer name for that killer blog event

A few months back, a few Filipino bloggers wanted to organize a “bloggers for bloggers” event similar to Gnomedex. Of course, Gnomedex was sponsored by Lockergnome which meant they had the resources to pull this off. At that time, we were looking for a sponsor for this type of event which would be geared more towards serious bloggers, which basically allude to adjectives like: prolific, stat-crazy, and “pro-.”

So here we are, and guess what? We may finally have a sponsor for this event to be held in a few weeks. The first item on the agenda is to think of a KILLER NAME for this event. Any suggestions?

Band of Bloggers is out. Some other suggestions include:

1. Blogcon
2. Philblog
3. Philippine Blog Summit
4. Father Abe-raham and the Pinoy Top Bloggers

Note that this is a bit different from the iBlog Summit that is held once a year. This event will be a bit more targeted towards specific problogging and blog optimization topics.

Leave a comment for suggestions. 🙂

“I am a Photographer” and other stereotype idiosyncrasies

33246735826035m.jpgI started my Photoworks classes yesterday under Leo Castillo. This is actually part of my “self development plan” which I’ve been putting off for some time. Photoworks is a word-of-mouth series of classes that started back in 2002 and has been raved as one of the better digital photography classes in the country. Session one was fun – it was defnitely something worth signing up for because it is meant to be experienced rather than “pare turuan mo na lang yung techniques na natuto mo ok?”

Other self development plans include enrolling in a fun physical activity to keep fit. I’m thinking of joining this group with my cousin. Does anyone do Airsoft? I used to enjoy this when I was young, and apparently airsoft guns have now evolved into really cool pieces of machinery. I want the sniper rifle.

Another self development plan includes traveling (alone). Im thinking of going to Singapore or Cambodia if the budget fits. Any suggestions where I can enrich myself somewhere in Asia apart from the Philippines? I realized that I haven’t been on a “real” vacation in three years. And who knows, maybe a rhinoplasty Toronto.

First online ad network?

Yesterday I physically introduced PTB owner Abe Olandres to some guys from K2 Interactive, a nontraditional ad agency that goes beyond traditional tri-media. I say physically because the two parties had been corresponding via email for quite some time now, and being friends with people from both parties I introduced them. Putting this in Malcolm Gladwell terms, I’m a “connector,” Abe is the “maven” and K2 is the “marketer.”

Long Tail Tall Tale

It seems like 2006 will be the Year of the Blog in the Philippines. Local blogging projects are getting more hype. For one, I’ve seen an increase in the number of professional bloggers, mostly network writers. Second, we’ve been seeing more personal interaction among bloggers with regular blogger meetups. Third, we are seeing interest from agencies to use the power of the long tail for maximum and diverse reach.

Globe Innove is also catching on the concept of blogging and the viral campaign. And just today, another (traditional) company has approached me to ask about online campaigns because they “have no idea how to do one.”
