Developing that killer instinct

If its one thing that the male-dominated developer world has, it is the pride to claim that they are going to develop the next KILLER.

We’re going to build the next iPod killer.
We’re going to develop the next MS Office killer.
We’re going to develop the Treo killer.

Aren’t you just sick of that? When the iPod became successful, was it because it killed something? No, don’t think so. It just made listening to music easier and much cooler.

The cellphone killed the pager because it was a proof on concept that being able to call someone back is much better than having a one way conversation over a text message that appeared on a one-line screen.

Those revolutions don’t happen every year though. So if you want to kill the iPod, or the Treo, or the next great office suite, I suggest you build something that will cause the POINT to tip.

What I’m trying to say is, you should not kill products, you should incite consumer revolutions.

Okay, that spiel sounded really stupid. But seriously though, the past few months has been quite interesting for local bloggers meeting up casually to exchange notes over sisig and crispy pata.

One thing I’ve noticed though. Most bloggers are practicing geeks and the latter have the tendency to get along quite well. A retinue of skills that most people in the industry posses include at least two of the following:

[] maintains a blog
[] plays an instrument
[] into photography
[] dabbles with photoshop
[] watches anime
[] knows how to program
[] girlfriend left him / her because of hobby obsession
[] knows how to use at least 2 types of operating systems
[] particiaptes in online forums and discussions

The Art that is Hard Gay

I’ve been recently intrigued by how the Japanese go to such lengths to create very interesting characters like Hard Gay.

The most well-known character developed and portrayed by Sumitani is Hard Gay, introduced in 2002, as whom he finally rose to national prominence in 2005. While the official name is “Razor Ramon HG”, he is most frequently known as “Hard Gay”, or simply HG. Dressing in a tight black leather outfit reminiscent of the Tom of Finland art, he goes around performing acts of charity (yonaoshi, “social improvement”) for unsuspecting bystanders while performing trademark pelvic thrusts and vocalisations, often accompanied by “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin.

What to expect: It’s a surprise party (shhh!)

Kudos to Innove for seeing this through. There is a huge potential for non-traditional media. As products get more niched, consumers are slowly becoming more educated not by the big corporations but by the honest little bloggers.

Class sked is as follows:
Day 1: August 28 Mon
Day 2: September 04 Mon
Day 3: September 06 Wed
Day 4: September 11 Mon
Day 5: September 13 Wed
Day 6: September 18 Mon

All sessions from 7PM-10PM. Photoworks is held at DPI Photography Center, Astoria Plaza, Jose Escriva Ave, Ortigas Center. Class fee is P4000 inclusive of prints for digital users, film for film users. Early Bird Promo of P3500 if you pay by August 23, 2006.

Class is limited to 20 slots and fills up VERY QUICKLY (the last 2 classes filled up within a week)!!
