Google has been working closely with Samsung to unveil the latest iteration of its ‘Nexus’ line. Simply put, whenever you see a phone tagged as Nexus, it means that it was made with direct collaboration with Google, not just through the regular Android licensing agreement for hardware manufacturers. So what does this mean?
Several things — Google’s acquisition of Motorola has really no bearing on a “preferred” OEM to make smartphones. Google partners with everyone and it looks like Motorola’s acquisition has more to do with gaining patents versus making a new line of Nexus devices. Samsung is the #1 Android smartphone manufacturer.
This is also a great debut release for Ice Cream Sandwich, which is Android 4.0. This is the OS that attempts to unify all Android tablets and smartphones into one operating system version, thereby reducing fragmentation. Fragmentation is when you have several version of Android running on many different phones. That makes not all the versions of Android the same and it becomes harder for developers to create apps because they’d have troubleshoot for each and every version. Apart from that, Ice Cream Sandwich allows for even better multitasking.
It also means that we’re stretching the limit to how big we actually want our phones. I honestly thought 4.3 inches was all that (find out the maximum width of what your hand can hold then back it up a bit) but this one is so much bigger, just a tad shy of the 5.0 inch WiFi devices such as the Dell Streak and the Samsung Galaxy WiFi. The Galaxy Nexus is also far from being a regular phone, with a huge 4.65 HD AMOLED (1280 x 720) inch screen, roughly 0.3 inches bigger than their current flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S II. It also sports a fast 1.2GHz dual core processor.
Last but not the least, the Galaxy Nexus comes with a separate LTE model (!!!) for high speed Internet.
