Hellgate London: The adventure thus far

It’s been two days since I got a copy of Hellgate London. Amidst mixed reviews from seasoned fans of MMORPGS, professional reviewers, and old time fans of Diablo II, Hellgate shines in many aspects and its defects, though frustrating, can only hope to be corrected with future patches.

I got a bit of advice from current players that the best way to speed through the game was to use the Guardian so I’ve been stuck with this character for the past several hours. I only managed ot reach level 7 as of tonight because I only get to play for quick fixes. Nonetheless, breezing through the first few mini bosses has been a treat, showing off the adrenaline rush Hellgate hoped to achieve.

It is the huge fights that gets the heart pumping. I managed to party up with two Marksmen for a quest to breach a Hellgate. Unlike WoW, where quests can take up one hour of your time, breaching a Hellgate only took 5 minutes – an intense 5 minutes where my eyes were constantly hooked to the lower right of the screen which identified my health bar.

What I especially like about Hellgate are the particle effects. It’s like one mini disco on the screen as you get strobe effects and sparks whenever something happens. Getting hit for instance turns the screen into black and white for a split second.

There are still several bugs that NEED to be resolved. When characters enter a level, you all respawn at the starting point whenever a player enters the dungeon. Sometimes, enemies tend to get stuck mid air when rushing towards you. Connection speed is another huge issue, as the Asian server has frequent disconnects that quickly bring an intense battle to an abrupt halt.

Is Hellgate London for you? Well, if you’re aiming for a quick fix between work, then this game is definitely for you. HG:L is mindless, fast paced, and gory. Welcome to hell!
