Losing My Memory!

Literally actually! I’ve been shooting at Medium to Large format lately with my 350D. And it has come to the point where I’m losing hard disk space.

I’m in the market for an external drive in the 100GB++ range. Right now I’m thinking of a LaCie brand external HD mainly because it sounds cool and also because I seem to have a bad affinity with Seagate throughout my geeky years – they always break down.

For the budget, I am also considering a generic desktop HD with an external casing. The drawback is that it doesn’t look as cool.

I will be filling the drive mostly with all my media – songs, pictures, movies — all of these are really cool (the best of Kenny Loggins — what could be cooler that that??? :P) so the drive must look cool too!

I’m also on the lookout for a home backup device (a.k.a. external hard drive) after my notebook’s hard drive (which was also from seagate) crashed. The LaCie really looks pretty and seems to be a reputable brand when it comes to storage, specially for the Mac users.

Those megapixel photos sure fills up quickly storage devices. On my part, since I shoot exclusively on RAW, I’ve been racking up DVDs for backup.

My 40GB EPSON, usually used for my travels needs a partner. Hmmm, a Lacie sure looks sexy. But that westerndigital seems cool too.

Btw, happy new year…

Cool, schmool! I’m not sure how much the LaCie unit costs, but I’m sure you can get more storage for the price – and that’s the most important thing, right?

No? Shoot a few more events – when you fill up your LaCie in all of 0.0000023 seconds, then maybe you’ll be singing the same tune I am.

A 3.5″ HDD case should cost you between PHP500 and PHP700 ($10~). A USB 2.0 / Firewire case could cost you some PHP2k ($40~) if you want that option. Throw in the cost of the HDD (PHP4.5k / $90~ for a 250GB Samsung, or PHP2.5k / $50~ for an 80GB Maxtor) and that probably won’t hit half the cost of the LaCie, or any other branded case, for that matter.

Right now I’m considering those network-based storage devices that you just plug into your router, and you can access them as if it’s another PC. The good thing about it is that you can add more hard drives when you need more storage space.

Hey JV. I was thinking about the minimax and the lacie Lego desktop drives (coz they were pretty cool looking and had FW) but the cost was too rich for me. so i settled for a 320gig iomega desktop HD. its only USB but it looks pretty good and is cheaper than the 120gig minimax.

Seagate problems? Tell Scoble, Seagate sponsors him!

I’m surprised about that… they are supposed to be reliable, and they have a 5-year warranty which nobody else has beat I think.

well my problem with seagate i guess has to do more with “hiyang” — it might just be bad luck on my part because all my seagate drives went bonkers. my maxtor and western digital HDs have been reliable.
